In this podcast, Sr. Employer Brand and People Experience Manager, Tannum, talks about Golden Hippo’s exciting and unique company culture with the people who know it best. In this episode, we spoke with Boh, who has been at Golden Hippo for a little over 1 year and is currently a Manager/Sr. Producer, Ad Creative.
Here are some of the highlights of Tannum and Boh’s conversation:
What’s your Golden Hippo story? How did you start your career here?
My background before Golden HIppo was mostly freelance; I was heavy into creating and directing my own UGC content before I came to the company. I had several clients, a business I built during Covid, and was really busy. I really enjoyed it, but I also wanted to look for a full-time corporate job for a few reasons. I wanted to grow and learn from this environment - getting to work with a team, have more resources at my disposal, and collaborating. I came to Golden Hippo through LinkedIn - I was looking for agency jobs and a lot of companies at the time were specifically hiring content creators. The listing stood out to me because it was looking for someone with more than just content creator experience. It looked very intriguing, so I applied.
What is your team’s dynamic like? How do you all work together?
We have a lovely team that has been growing. It started fairly small and now we’re up to over 30 people. It’s not as big as it sounds because we are working on various offers and brands, so you have a smaller group of people that you’re working with regularly. I know everyone on the team and have worked with everyone, and it’s a really great, positive, communication-oriented team. Everyone seems happy to be here and they show it through their Slack communications, meetings, and when we go into the office. Everyone has unique personalities, and it makes for a very fun, unique team.
How do you balance work-life responsibilities while maintaining a focus on your career goals?
I work 9 to 5 for the most part. I think there’s a healthy balance of being able to close your computer at the end of the day. When you’re shooting, things can be a little more intensive, but there’s definitely a healthy flow from shoot time and more relaxing days.
What does a typical work day look like? (Remote)
It’s all over the place, but storytellers are always in a cycle of ideating, executing, and seeing it through post-production. A typical day could be spending time on TikTok and Instagram doing market research and scouring the internet for original angle ideas. The next step of that process is really scripting the idea; that can be anything from writing a full script or writing interview questions. It really just depends on the content and format that we’re going to execute. Our team is very high output, so we move quickly and get a lot of ideas out there fast. Personally I thrive in that environment because I have a lot of ideas and I like to just get them all done.
What is your management style like?
I am hands-on in the beginning, making sure someone feels they have all the tools at their disposal. I like to give people projects right away to have something to do and give them the opportunity to showcase their ideas as early as possible. I think that helps you learn - that’s always how I’ve learned. I’m heavy on positive feedback and telling people what they're good at.
What makes Golden Hippo stand out as an employer?
Golden Hippo is a unique place because people get to be themselves. It’s relaxed in the ways that it should be, and we’re professional where we need to be. For creatives, it’s great having it be a hybrid role. I love being able to be in the comfort of my own home when I’m writing and coming up with ideas. You also get to go into the office and communicate with people. It’s such a great balance. The benefits are unbelievable. Everyone says great things about the benefits here, and it’s one of the great things about this job.
